2019 CAIRNS LANGUAGES SPEAKING COMPETITION
Recently some of our Senior Italian students from Year 11 to Year 12 participated in the MLTAQ Cairns Languages Speaking Competition where local schools competed against each other. Students had to present an original speech on a given topic. High praise must go to our participants Kasi Barford, Eva Quintieri and Anna Greenland who competed in the Italian speaking division and certainly did us proud on the day!
Congratulations to the following place-getters in the competition:
Year 12 Italian division Eva Quintieri - Third place
Year 12 Italian division Anna Greenland - Honourable Mention
These students have been invited to compete in the Italian Speaking Competition State Finals organised by the Italian Language Centre, to be held in Brisbane on Sunday 20th October. In bocca al lupo!
QUEENSLAND-SWITZERLAND STUDENT EXCHANGE
We are excited to announce that two students of Year 11 Italian have been awarded the 2019-2020 Queensland-Switzerland Student Exchange Program, organized through the Queensland Department of Education. Congratulations to Courtney Ford and Sophia Kim who are the worthy recipients of this year’s program. Selection procedures are rigorous and only a few of these scholarships are awarded state-wide each year.
The program offers the unique opportunity of doing an eight-week exchange in Ticino, in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland. Courtney and Sophia will leave Australia at the end of November this year and will return late January next year.
The exchange consists of an immersion program whereby the students will be hosted by a Swiss family and they will attend a local high school daily. The girls will live like the locals and will become totally immersed in the language and culture. Not only will they become proficient in the Italian language but they will also learn a great deal about themselves.
Exchange programs such as these promote tolerance, maturity and independence. We wish Courtney and Sophia well when they embark on their journey of personal growth.
2019-2020 STUDITALIA PRIZE
The other good news is that two of our Year 12 Italian students have been shortlisted for the StuditaliA prize, a highly coveted prize where only a few of these prizes are awarded Queensland-wide. Eva Quintieri and Anna Greenland will have a fifteen-minute interview in English and in Italian next week as part of the application process. The StuditaliA Prize is offered by the Queensland Department of Education and the Consulate of Italy. It is an initiative to promote excellence in Italian language studies in Queensland high schools and rewards the achievements of Year 12 students of Italian. We wish both Eva and Anna a successful interview!
DENEN CHOFU GAKUEN VISIT
Thirty-six Japanese girls from Denen Chofu Gakuen (Tokyo) will visit St Mary’s this year from 29th July till 9th August. During their stay the girls will be immersed in the daily life of the school, experiencing mainstream classes with their buddies and also enjoying a variety of exciting activities with our students of Japanese. We are still seeking host families from the St Mary’s community. If you are willing to host one of these girls please contact Vicky Bremner at the front office.
