The St Mary’s Catholic College Career Education Service supports students as they explore their strengths, interests and future pathways.

Led by our dedicated Career Education Counsellor, Mrs Felicity Earl, the service provides personalised guidance to students and their families, to empower them to make informed decisions about both current subject choices and post-school pathways.

Students also have access to our comprehensive College Careers website, which provides up-to-date information on courses, training pathways, occupations and planning tools.

Digital disruption, the growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the expanding nature of modern work mean that young people now need a strong set of enterprise or employability skills — the capabilities that distinguish human thinking from automated processes. 

These skills include:

  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Problem solving
  • Initiative and enterprise
  • Planning and organising
  • Self-management
  • Learning
  • Technology skills 

At St Mary’s, we help students develop these essential skills through classroom learning, real-world experiences, careers activities and school-wide projects. Students are encouraged to think creatively about their future and to consider the possibility of creating jobs that do not yet exist. Many become genuinely excited about the opportunities ahead.

The Career Education Service aims to build students’ capacity to make confident and informed choices by developing:

  • Knowledge of the world of work, including its changing nature, employer expectations and workplace demands
  • Understanding of their own interests, abilities, strengths, values and goals, and how these relate to careers
  • Skills required for career planning, decision-making and navigating pathways
  • Confidence in implementing decisions, taking next steps and setting achievable goals

The service is available to students across all year levels.
