The Guidance Counselling service at St Mary’s Catholic College is dedicated to supporting the wellbeing, development and mental health of all students. Our counsellors work collaboratively with students, families, teachers and school leaders to promote positive relationships, resilience and personal growth.

Counselling helps students engage more fully in their learning by providing a safe and confidential space to talk, reflect and develop strategies to navigate the challenges of a rapidly changing world. The service supports students’ personal, social, emotional, educational and vocational needs and operates within the guidelines of student protection legislation and Catholic Education Services policy.

What Counselling Can Support

Students may seek support for a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Conflict resolution
  • Anger management
  • Communication skills
  • Time management and study skills
  • Decision-making
  • Career development
  • Grief and loss
  • Mental health concerns, including depression and anxiety
  • Issues around excessive screen use
  • Parenting or family challenges
  • Any other personal concern

Counsellors help students explore options, set goals and develop practical strategies for positive change. When appropriate, referrals can be made for further assessment and specialist support.

Community agencies may be involved for matters such as domestic violence, trauma, family separation, suicidal ideation, self-harm and mental health needs requiring clinical intervention.

The Guidance Counselling service also contributes to the broader pastoral care and wellbeing programs across the College by:

  • Supporting Heads of Year and teachers in delivering Social and Emotional Learning and behaviour support programs
  • Providing advice and resources related to Student Protection, Bullying and Harassment
  • Working with Health and Physical Education staff to promote life skills and mental health education
  • Collaborating with Learning Support and Special Needs programs to assist individual student needs
