St Mary’s Catholic College offers students opportunities to build confidence, develop their communication skills and engage with important ideas through public speaking and debating. These programs help students grow as effective speakers, creative thinkers and collaborative learners.

Students in Years 11 and 12 participate in  the Lions Youth of the Year Quest (Years 11–12) as proteges of the Edmonton Lions Club.  Participants deliver a prepared speech on a topic of their choice and respond to impromptu questions on current social issues. This competition encourages leadership, critical thinking and confident public expression.

Throughout their preparation, students receive guidance from experienced St Mary’s teachers who support them in topic development, script writing, argumentation, delivery skills and overall presentation.

St Mary’s proudly competes in the Cairns Diocese Catholic Schools Debating Cup, entering both Junior and Senior teams each year.

Debaters learn valuable skills in:

  • Listening and responding effectively
  • Constructing clear and logical arguments
  • Developing strong rebuttal
  • Working collaboratively
  • Speaking confidently under pressure
